What is Zakat

Zakat is one of the fundamental pillars of Islam, emphasizing social justice, compassion, and support for the less fortunate. It is an obligatory form of charity that requires eligible Muslims to give a portion of their wealth—2.5% of savings—to those in need. More than a financial duty, Zakat serves as a means to purify wealth, promote equality, and ensure that the underprivileged have access to basic necessities like food, shelter, healthcare, and education.

“The believers, men and women, are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, and they establish prayer and give Zakat.”

— Surah At-Tawbah (9:71)

By fulfilling your Zakat obligation, you not only help transform lives but also strengthen your connection with Allah and serve humanity in a way that brings blessings and reward.

Zakat in the Qur'an

  • Allah (SWT) commands in the Holy Qur’an:
“And establish prayer and give Zakat, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves – you will find it with Allah. Surely Allah sees what you do.”
    — Surah Al-Baqarah (2:110)
  • Zakat is not just an act of charity but a divine command to help those in need:
“Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them to increase, and invoke blessings upon them. Indeed, your invocations are reassurance for them. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.”
    — Surah At-Tawbah (9:103)

Hadith on Zakat

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized the importance of Zakat:

  • “The upper hand is better than the lower hand. The upper hand is the one that gives, and the lower hand is the one that takes.”
    — Sahih Al-Bukhari (1429)
  • “Whoever pays the Zakat on his wealth will have its evil removed from him.”
    — Sunan Ibn Majah (1789)

The Purpose of Zakat

1. Purify One’s Wealth and Soul
  • Zakat purifies both wealth and soul, removing greed and fostering gratitude. It reminds Muslims that wealth is a blessing from Allah, and sharing it earns barakah (blessings).
“Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them to increase.”
    — Surah At-Tawbah (9:103)
2. Reduce Financial Disparity
  • Zakat reduces the gap between the rich and the poor, ensuring everyone’s basic needs are met. It promotes social justice by redistributing wealth and preventing extreme poverty.
“It is not a believer who eats his fill while his neighbor goes hungry.”
    — Sunan Al-Kubra (19049)
3. Support the Vulnerable
  • Zakat provides relief to orphans, widows, and the needy by offering food, shelter, and healthcare. It empowers them to live with dignity and break the cycle of poverty.
“And give the relatives their due, and the needy, and the traveler. And do not spend wastefully.”
    — Surah Al-Isra (17:26)

What is Nisab?

Nisab refers to the minimum amount of wealth a person must possess before becoming eligible to pay Zakat. For gold, the Nisab is 20 mithqal, which is approximately 85 grams of pure gold (1 mithqal equals 4.25 grams). In Pakistani Rupees (PKR), this is calculated based on the current market price of gold.

For silver, the Nisab is 200 dirhams, which equals about 595 grams of pure silver. The value in Pakistani Rupees is determined according to the current silver rates in the market.

When calculating Zakat on other forms of wealth, such as cash, savings, or assets, their value is compared to 85 grams of pure gold using its current market price in PKR. This ensures that Zakat is calculated accurately based on local gold prices in Pakistan.

Examples

If the Nisab value is £2,250 (PKR 497,451) and your combined savings and gold value amount to £2,600 (PKR 575,222), then you must pay 2.5% of the total as Zakat:

Zakat = £65 (PKR 14,363)

How to Calculate Zakat Easily

To determine your Zakat, follow these steps on any day of the year (e.g., 21st Ramadan):

Add Up Your Total Assets:

  • Value of gold and silver
  • Savings, cash, and investments
  • Business stock and profits

Deduct Your Liabilities:

  • Any immediate bills
  • Short-term debts owed to others

If the remaining balance exceeds the Nisab value, you are required to pay 2.5% of the total as Zakat.
