What is Sadaqah?

Sadaqah is a voluntary act of charity in Islam, given with the intention of seeking Allah’s pleasure and helping those in need. Unlike Zakat, which is obligatory, Sadaqah can be given at any time and in any amount. It is a powerful way to purify one’s wealth, earn rewards, and make a positive impact on society.

Types of Sadaqah

  • Sadaqah Jariyah: Ongoing charity that continues to benefit even after the giver has passed away, such as building a well, establishing an educational institution, or supporting a hospital.
  • Regular Sadaqah: One-time donations to support individuals or specific causes.
  • Sadaqah for Health: Providing healthcare support for those in need of medical treatment.
  • Sadaqah for Education: Supporting educational initiatives, helping children and adults access learning opportunities.

Sadaqah in the Qur'an

Sadaqah, which means voluntary charity, holds great importance in Islam. The Quran emphasizes the significance of giving in the way of Allah, as it brings spiritual rewards, purifies one’s wealth, and supports the welfare of the community.

Allah says in the Quran:

  1. “The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed of grain which grows seven ears; in each ear, there are a hundred grains.”
    — Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261) This verse highlights that every act of charity, no matter how small, is multiplied many times over by Allah’s mercy. Sadaqah is a way to purify one’s wealth and foster a sense of empathy towards those who are less fortunate. It’s not limited to money; it can also include any good deed, such as helping others, sharing knowledge, or even a kind word. The Quran further reminds us of the importance of giving:
  2. “You will never attain righteousness until you give from what you love.”
    — Surah Al-Imran (3:92)  This encourages Muslims to give from what is most beloved to them, and to do so with sincerity and a pure heart. Sadaqah is a powerful tool for cultivating generosity, kindness, and a closer relationship with Allah. It strengthens communities, helps alleviate poverty, and supports those in need, ensuring that wealth circulates to uplift the whole society.

Hadith on Sadaqah

Sadaqah (voluntary charity) holds a special place in Islamic teachings, and numerous hadiths emphasize its importance and the immense rewards associated with it. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) spoke extensively about the benefits of giving Sadaqah, stressing that it purifies the soul and wealth, while benefiting both the giver and the receiver.

  1. One of the most well-known hadiths related to Sadaqah is:
“Every act of goodness is charity. Even a smile to your brother is charity.”
    — Sahih Muslim  This hadith emphasizes that Sadaqah is not limited to monetary donations but can include any positive action or kind gesture. Whether it’s offering a helping hand, giving advice, or simply smiling, every good deed is considered a form of charity.
  2. The Prophet (PBUH) also assured that the rewards of Sadaqah are never lost:
“Sadaqah does not decrease wealth, but rather increases it.”
    — Sahih Muslim This hadith encourages believers to give with the confidence that charity is not a loss but an investment that brings blessings, both in this world and the hereafter.
  3. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) further stated:
“Charity is a proof of your faith.”
    — Sahih Muslim  Giving Sadaqah is a reflection of one’s sincerity in faith. It purifies the heart, brings peace to the soul, and strengthens the bond with Allah. By fulfilling the obligation of Sadaqah, believers express their gratitude to Allah and their compassion for fellow human beings.

Why Give Sadaqah?

Sadaqah is a powerful tool for both personal growth and community development. By giving, we not only help those in need but also cultivate a generous heart. It is a means of earning Allah’s favor, erasing sins, and improving the world around us. Whether small or large, every act of Sadaqah contributes to creating a more compassionate and just society.
