“The believers, men and women, are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, and they establish prayer and give Zakat.”
— Surah At-Tawbah (9:71)
By fulfilling your Zakat obligation, you not only help transform lives but also strengthen your connection with Allah and serve humanity in a way that brings blessings and reward.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized the importance of Zakat:
Nisab refers to the minimum amount of wealth a person must possess before becoming eligible to pay Zakat. For gold, the Nisab is 20 mithqal, which is approximately 85 grams of pure gold (1 mithqal equals 4.25 grams). In Pakistani Rupees (PKR), this is calculated based on the current market price of gold.
For silver, the Nisab is 200 dirhams, which equals about 595 grams of pure silver. The value in Pakistani Rupees is determined according to the current silver rates in the market.
When calculating Zakat on other forms of wealth, such as cash, savings, or assets, their value is compared to 85 grams of pure gold using its current market price in PKR. This ensures that Zakat is calculated accurately based on local gold prices in Pakistan.
If the Nisab value is £2,250 (PKR 497,451) and your combined savings and gold value amount to £2,600 (PKR 575,222), then you must pay 2.5% of the total as Zakat:
Zakat = £65 (PKR 14,363)
To determine your Zakat, follow these steps on any day of the year (e.g., 21st Ramadan):
Add Up Your Total Assets:
Deduct Your Liabilities:
If the remaining balance exceeds the Nisab value, you are required to pay 2.5% of the total as Zakat.
Zakat can only be given to the eight categories mentioned in the Quran (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:60):
It is essential to distribute Zakat responsibly to ensure it directly benefits these eligible groups
Zakatable wealth includes:
Non-zakatable assets include personal belongings, your primary home, and daily-use items like furniture or clothing. Zakat is calculated annually at 2.5% of the total value of zakatable assets.
Zakat becomes obligatory when your wealth equals or exceeds the Nisab for a full lunar year (355 days). If your wealth drops below the Nisab during the year, the cycle resets when it reaches the Nisab again.
